What is Strontium Hypobromite?

Preparation

Strontium Hypobromite may be prepared by the same methods given above for the magnesium or calcium salts.
Br2(liq)+ 2OH(aq)→Br(aq)+ BrO(aq)+H2O(liq)
If SrCl2 is present, a soluble salt, Sr(ClO)2 results. However, removal of the salt by vacuum evaporation causes a disproportionation reaction in which the bromide and bromate are obtained. Because of this redox reaction, even at 0°C, strontium hypobromite is always supplied as a solution. The holding container must be carefully sealed since bromine vapor will escape from the solution.
Because of this instability, strontium hypobromite has found little usage in Industry. Alkali solutions are more basic than alkaline earth solutions (i.e. NaOH vs Sr(OH)2) and have proven more useful.
