What is Calcium Hypobromite?
Preparation
Calcium hypobromite can be prepared by the same methods as the magnesium
salt, namelydthe addition of bromine to a basic
solution at a temperature <0°C:
Br2(liq)+ 2OH(aq)→Br(aq)+ BrO(aq)+H2O(liq)
If CaCl2 is present, a soluble salt, Ca(ClO)2 results.
However, removal of the salt by vacuum evaporation
causes a disproportionation reaction in which the
bromide and bromate are obtained. Because of this
redox reaction, even at 0°C, calcium hypobromite is
always supplied as a solution.
Calcium hypobromite is available commercially in
limited quantities. However, it is usually prepared in
situ as needed at the site of usage.
