N-Vinylformamide (NVF / VFA) is an open-chain vinylamide monomer widely used in specialty polymer synthesis, water treatment, papermaking, and biomedical applications.
Key Applications
Precursor to Poly(vinylamine) (PVAm): Direct polymerization of vinylamine monomer is not feasible because vinylamine readily tautomerizes to ethanimine. NVF undergoes free-radical polymerization to form poly(N-vinylformamide) (PNVF), which is then acid- or base-hydrolyzed into high charge-density cationic PVAm.
Papermaking Industry: Used as dry-strength additives, retention aids, and drainage aids due to high cationic charge density upon hydrolysis.
Water Treatment & Flocculation: Produces cationic flocculants for wastewater treatment, sludge dewatering, and selective membrane filtration.
Personal Care & Cosmetics: Used in hair-fixative styling polymers and conditioning agents (e.g., VP/Vinylformamide/Vinylamine copolymers).
Energy & Biomedical: Acts as an aqueous binder in lithium-ion battery electrodes (e.g., LTO anodes), biocompatible hydrogels for controlled drug delivery, and coatings for medical devices.
Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR): Synthesizes thermally stable and salt-tolerant water-soluble polymers for drilling fluids and mobility control.
