What is VITAMIN H?
Description
Biotin is present in small amounts in every living cell. Bound mainly to proteins and polypeptides, it is essential for many biological carboxylation reactions. It is necessary for cell growth, fatty acid production, and fat and amino acid metabolism. Biotin was isolated from egg yolk by F. K?gl and B. T?nnis in 1936. E. W. Tate and co-workers recently?attached it to a post-translational cholesterylation reporter molecule?for purification purposes.
Physical properties
Appearance: biotin is a white crystalline substance. Stability: it is fairly stable to air, heat, and light in dry form. In solution, however, it tends to degrade under strongly acidic or basic conditions. In the eight possible stereoisomers of biotin, only the (+)-isomer (called d-biotin) has biological activity. Biotin is covalently bound to its enzymes by an amide bond to the ε-amino group of a lysine residue and C-2 of the thiophane nucleus. The biotin molecule is activated by polarization of the O and N-1’atoms of the ureido nucleus. This leads to increased nucleophilicity at N-1′, which promotes the formation of a covalent bond between the electrophilic car bonyl phosphate formed from bicarbonate and ATP, and allows biotin to serve as a transport agent for CO2.
The Uses of VITAMIN H
biotin (biotine; vitamin B7/vitamin H) is anti-seborrhoeic. Some cosmetic manufacturers claim biotin has healing properties and as such, is a good ingredient for treating acne skin. Biotin is also part of the B complex group of vitamins (specifically vitamin B7). A deficiency of this vitamin has been associated with greasy scalp and baldness. Its deficiency in humans is considered extremely rare, and the value of external applications through the use of cosmetic products is questionable.
The Uses of VITAMIN H
Vitamin H (Biotin) is a water-soluble vitamin that is a nutrient and dietary supplement. It is relatively stable to heat and storage and is found in eggs, liver, peanuts, milk, and meat. It functions in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. It is essential for the activity of many enzyme systems.
Definition
ChEBI: Biotin is an organic heterobicyclic compound that consists of 2-oxohexahydro-1H-thieno[3,4-d]imidazole having a valeric acid substituent attached to the tetrahydrothiophene ring. The parent of the class of biotins. It has a role as a prosthetic group, a coenzyme, a nutraceutical, a human metabolite, a Saccharomyces cerevisiae metabolite, an Escherichia coli metabolite, a mouse metabolite, a cofactor and a fundamental metabolite. It is a member of biotins and a vitamin B7. It is a conjugate acid of a biotinate.
