What is Magnesium Thionates?
Description
Magnesium dithionite has the molecular formula of
MgS2O4 and the molecular weight of 168.4341 g/mol.
The “thionite” and “thionate” salts ofmagnesiuminclude:
Magnesium dithionite=MgS2O4
Magnesium dithionate=MgS2O6
Magnesium tetrathionate=MgS4O6
Magnesium dithionite, MgS2O4, may be prepared by
the reaction of magnesium chloride with sodium
dithonite:
MgCl2+ Na2S2O4?MgS2O4+ 2NaCl
Alternatively, it may be prepared by the solid-state
reaction of SO2 gas upon the sulfite:
Mg(HSO3)2
+ SO2(gas)+ heat?MgS2O4
+H2O
This reaction could probably be carried out in solution
as well. However, the reaction would be dependent
upon the pH of the solution and a pH of about 5.0 would
produce the hydrosulfite:
MgCl2+ 2(NH4)2SO3+ SO2
? MgS2O4
+ 2NH4Cl+H2O
This method is mentioned in a patent where all of the
other alkaline earths are cited as well. The description of
the physical and chemical properties of this salt are
completely lacking in the scientific and technological
literature. Magnesium dithionite is mentioned in a few
patents as a reducing agent to decolorize wood pulp.
The older reference books like Sidgewick or Remy (1933
or 1950) do not list such a compound as being known.
