What is IL-6RΑ HUMAN?

General Description

IL-6Rα (interleukin 6Rα) is a receptor for IL-6, and the IL-6R receptor complex is composed of interleukin 6 signal transducer (IL6ST/IL-6β). This gene is localized to human chromosome 1q21.3.
Recombinant human sIL-6Rα is a 37.6kDa protein consisting of the extracellular domain of the IL-6Rα chain (339 amino acid residues).

Biochem/physiol Actions

IL-6(interleukin 6) interacts with IL-6R, and this complex then interacts with IL6ST/GP130 (interleukin 6 signal transducer/glycoprotein 130), resulting in intracellular signaling cascades. In Korean patients with ischemic stroke (IS) the rs4845617 variant of IL-6Rα is linked with the neurologic status. A genome wide association study (GWAS) in apparently healthy women shows that variants in IL-6R gene are linked with C-reactive protein (CRP) expression. CRP molecule can independently help determine the increased susceptibility to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, myocardial infarction, and stroke.
