Beryllium Iodate
- Empirical Formula: BeI2O6
- Molecular Weight: 358.817522
What is Beryllium Iodate?
Description
Beryllium iodate is expected to have the molecular
formula, Be(IO3)2 and the molecular weight of
374.1104 g/mol. In view of the hydrolysis of the Be2+ cation in other compounds prepared in aqueous solution,
the composition is expected to be Be(OH)IO3.
However, beryllium forms a complex iodate in solution
which has been characterized by X-ray analysis as
Be(IO3)2·2HIO3 It can be prepared by reaction of iodic
acid and beryllium hydroxide:
Be(OH)2
+3HIO3→Be(IO3)2·2HIO3+H2O
Beryllium iodate has found little usage in Industry but
has been available commercially in limited quantities.
Perhaps, this is due to the toxicity of beryllium in general.
