The Uses of Ammonium hexafluorophosphate

Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is used as a preservative. It is used as a starting material in the preparation of other hexafluorophosphates. Further, it is used in synthesis of organometalic compounds, especially rhodicinium hexafluorophosphate, which has inert and non-coordinating counter ion.

Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is used to synthesize polyethylene oxide based highly conductive non aqueous polymer gel electrolytes exhibiting high conductivity (>10-2S/cm at 25^oC)

Ammonium hexafluorophosphate (NH₄PF₆) can be used as a precursor for the preparation of:

• The polymer-supported iridium isomerization catalyst for the selective trans isomerization of aryl allylic derivatives.

General Description

Ammonium hexafluorophosphate decomposes on heating before melting. Solubility of ammonium hexafluorophosphate in H₂O at 20^oC is 74.8% w/v. Additionally, it is very soluble in Me₂CO, MeOH, EtOH and MeOAc, and is decomposed by boiling mineral acids.

Purification Methods

It crystallises from H2O in square plates and decomposes on heating before melting. Its solublility in H2O at 20o is 74.8% w/v, and it is very soluble in Me2CO, MeOH, EtOH and MeOAc but is decomposed by boiling mineral acids.
