What is 2,6-Dinitro-p-cresol?
Chemical properties
yellow-orange flakes
The Uses of 2,6-Dinitro-p-cresol
Uses are the same as those of the isomer 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol.
Production Methods
p-Cresol is dinitrated directly in dilute sulfuric acid solution by careful addition of nitric acid to yield 2,6-dinitro-p-cresol.
Safety Profile
Poison by intraperitoneal route. Mutation data reported. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx. See also other dinitrocresol entries.
Purification Methods
Recrystallise the cresol from EtOH. It is steam volatile. The piperidine salt has m 195o. [Beilstein 6 H 414, 6 II 391, 6 III 1390, 6 IV 2152.] TOXIC IRRITANT.
