Description
α-Lipomycin is an antibiotic originally isolated from S. aureofaciens. It is the glycoside form of β-lipomycin that has activity against Gram-positive bacteria but not against fungi or yeasts. The antibiotic activity of α-lipomycin is antagonized by some sterols and lecithin.

Lipomycin has potent Gram positive antibacterial activity with no activity against fungi, including yeasts. The antibiotic activity is antagonized by lecithin and some sterols, implying alterations of the cell membrane.
