What is VOACOLINE?

Description

The major alkaloid of Voacanga chalotiana apart from the preceding base, this alkaloid crystallizes as colourless prisms from Et20 and has [α]²⁰_D - 29.8° (c 0.5, CHCI3). The O-methyl ether has m.p. 2l1-2°C; O-ethyl ether, m.p. 215-6°C and with methyl iodide in acetonitrile, the base yields N(b)-methylvoacolinium iodide, m. p. 180-1 ° C. LiAIH4 reduces the alkaloid to voacolinol, a colourless oil.
