What is VOACHOLATINE?

Description

The major constituent of Voacanga chalotiana (Pierre et Stapf.), this alkaloid forms colourless prisms or needles from MeOH and is slightly laevorotatory with [0']0 - 2.8° (CHCI3). A primary alcoholic hydroxyl group is present and the alkaloid yields the O-acetate, m.p. 180-181.5°C; [α]D- 34° (CHCI3), giving a methiodide, m.p. 199-202°C. The alkaloid itself also yields a crystalline methiodide, m.p. 244-6°C; [α]D - 49° (MeOH).
