What is VOACAMINE N-OXIDE?

Description

Chromatography of the basic extract from Voacanga africana yields this alkaloid which is laevorotatory with [α]578 - 54° (c 1.0, CHCI3) or + 110° (c 0.11, pyridine). When heated with fuming HN03 the base yields Voacangine (q.v.) while treatment with iron powder in AcOH gives Voacamine (q.v.). Hydrogenation with Pt yields the dihydro derivative, m.p. 215-8°C.
