What is VINBLASTINE (Vincaleukablastine)?

Description

A complex dimeric alkaloid occurring in Vinca rosea L., the base crystallizes from Et20 with one mole of solvent, m.p. 180-2°e. When crystallized from MeOH, the m.p. is 211-6°C. The alkaloid is dextrorotatory with [α]D + 42° and forms a dihydrochloride as the dihydrate, m.p. 244-6°C (dec.); the sulphate, m.p. 284-5°C; [α]26D- 28° (MeOH) and the diacetate, m.p. 168-1700 C; [α]D 26.4° (CHCL3).
Pharmacologically, the alkaloid has a marked antitumour activity and is active against certain leukaemias.
