What is UNSEVINE?

Description

The roots and hulls of Ungernia severtzovii contain this alkaloid which is dextro_x0002_rotatory with [α]_D + 163° (CHCI3). It has been characterized as the oxalate, m.p. 19S-6°C and the methiodide, m.p. 249-2S0°C. Reduction with LiAIH4 gives the dihydro derivative, m.p. IS4-SoC. Catalytic reduction furnishes the tetrahydro compound, m.p. 186-7°C. Hofmann degradation with silver oxide yields optically inactive de-N-methylunsevine, m.p. I55-6°C and finally a nitrogen-free compound, C16Hl0O4, m.p. 184-5°C.
