What is TYLOPHERINE?

Description

This alkaloid was first obtained in an impure form by Hooper from Tylophora asthrnatica Wight & Arn. and subsequently found in Ficus septica. It crystallizes well from a mixture of EtOH and CHCI3 and has [α]²⁷_D - 11.6° (c 1.07, CHCI3) or [α]²⁹_D - 15.8° (CHCI3). The hydrochloride yields colourless crystals from aqueous EtOH, m.p. 276-8°C (dec.); hydrobromide, m.p. 252-5°C (dec.); nitrate, m.p. 265-7°C and the methiodide, m.p.280°C.
The (+)-form of the base has m.p. 292°C (dec.); [α]²⁰_D + 12.25° (c 0.733, CHCI3) and the optically inactive form, m.p. 292°C (dec.).
