What is Tabernamine?

Description

This alkaloid, isolated from the root bark of Tabernaernontana johnstonii obtained from Kenya, forms a colourless amorphous powder. It has a specific rotation of [α]22D - 51°(c 0.18, MeOH) and gives an ultraviolet spectrum in EtOH with absorption maxima at 235, 287 and 295 nm. Acid cleavage gives ibogamine and the base has been synthesized from vobasinol and ibogamine. Tabernamine has cytotoxic properties with significant inhibitory action against P388 lymphocytic and human carcinoma of the nasopharynx.
