SOLAN GUSTINE

Description

A steroidal alkaloid isolated from Solanum angusti!olium by Tutin and Clewer, the base separates from boiling amyl alcohol as pale yellow clusters of micro_x0002_scopic needles of the monohydrate. The alkaloid is virtually insoluble in H20 and other organic solvents with the exception of pyridine. The sulphate trihydrate has m.p. > 325°C and is only soluble in boiling AcOH and then only with difficulty. The acetyl derivative has been prepared as an amorphous powder. On hydrolysis, the alkaloid yields dextrose and solangustidine, C27H430 2N, which is amorphous but gives crystalline salts, e.g. the hydrochloride, m:p. > 325°C; nitrate, m.p. 290°C (dec.); picrate, m.p. 250°C and the acetyl derivative, m.p.256°C.
