What is SOLACAULINE?
Description
This steroidal alkaloid occurs in the leaves of Solanum acaula and forms colourless needles from a mixture of EtOH, H20 and dioxan. It is laevorotatory with [α]20D - 30° (c 0.45, pyridine) and gives an octaacetyl derivative as a white precipitate, m.p. 141°C. The structure has been deduced by hydrolysis with HCl when solanine, two moles of D-xylose and one mole of D-glucose are formed, the sugars being attached as a trisaccharide.
