What is SLAG?

The Uses of SLAG

Railroad ballast, highway construction, cement and concrete aggregate, raw material for Portland cement, mineral wool, and cinder block.

Definition

Glasslike compounds of comparatively low melting point formed during the extraction of metals when the impurities in an ore react with a flux. The fact that the slag is a liquid of comparatively low density means that it can be separated from the liquid metal on which it floats. In a blast furnace, the flux used is limestone (CaCO3) and the main impurity is silica (SiO2). The slag formed is mainly calcium silicate:
CaCO3 + SiO2 → CaSiO3
It is used as railroad ballast and in fertilizers and concrete.

Definition

slag: Material produced during thesmelting or refining of metals by reactionof the flux with impurities(e.g. calcium silicate formed by reactionof calcium oxide ?ux with silicondioxide impurities). The liquidslag can be separated from the liquidmetal because it ?oats on the surface.

Agricultural Uses

Slag is a fused agglomerate, usually of silicates, which separates during metal smelting and floats on the surface of the molten metal. It is formed by the combination of flux with gangue of ore, ash of fuel and perhaps furnace lining.
Slag is often used as the medium to separate impurities from metal.
Slag also means the residue or ash from coal gasification processes. It may run as high as 40% depending on the rank of coal used.
