The Uses of Silane, trichloro[(1-methoxyethenyl)oxy]-

Methyl Trichlorosilyl Ketene Acetal is widely used as reagent for the enantioselective acetate aldol additions to aldehydes and ketones.Under catalysis by Lewis bases, a variety of aldehydes and ketones react smoothly with Methyl Trichlorosilyl Ketene Acetal at room temperature to afford the aldol addition products in high yields.

Preparation

One route is through bis(tributyltin) oxide-catalyzed transmetalation of methyl tributylstannyl acetate (2) with silicon tetrachloride (eq 1).3 When the reaction is complete, excess silicon tetrachloride is removed and the product is purified by fractional distillation under reduced pressure.
