What is ROMNEINE?
Description
An oily isoquinoline alkaloid obtained from the roots of Romneya coulteri var. trichocalyx (Eastwood) Jepson, the base has [α]27D + 37° (c 0.11, EtOH) and the ultraviolet spectrum shows a single absorption maximum at 268 IDJl. The alkaloid has been characterized as the hydrobromide, m.p. 226-8°C; [α]28D + 40° (c 0.26, EtOH). The structure has been confirmed by synthesis as 1-(3:4- dimethoxybenzyl)-l :2: 3 :4-tetrahydro-2-methyl-6 :7-methylenedioxyisoquinoline. The optically inactive synthetic base yields a hydrobromide, m.p. 194-6°C.
