What is OREOLINE?
Description
A third alkaloid isolated from Papaver oreophilum Rupr., this base is a spiroiso_x0002_quinoline alkaloid. It is best purified by sublimation when it forms transparent crystals. It has [α] 20 D 87° (c 0.5, EtOH) and the ultraviolet spectrum exhibits a single broad absorption maximum at 285 mfJ.. Neither the O-methyl ether, nor the O,N-dimethyl derivative are crystallizable, although the latter yields a crystalline methiodide, m.p. 190-2°C. The free base also yields a methiodide, m.p. 259- 261 °e. The N-methyl derivative occurs naturally (q.v.).
