What is N-METHYLPARAVALLARIDINE?

Description

A minor constituent of Paravallaris microphylla, this alkaloid is laevorotatory with [α]20D - 49° (c 0.29, CHCI3). Treatment with AC20 in pyridine yields the O-acetate, m.p. 170°C; [α]20D - 43° (c 0.23, CHCI3). Catalytic hydrogenation over Pt02 gives the dihydro derivative, m.p. 237°C; [α]20D - 21° (c 0.28, CHCI3) which furnishes the corresponding O-acetate, m.p. 176°C; [α]20D - 25° (c 0.16, CHCI3). By comparison with Paravallaridine (q.v.), the structure of the alkaloid is shown to be N-methyl-16-a-paravallarine.
