What is LOVERAINE?
Description
An alkaloid of Veratrum lobelianum Bernh. where it is found primarily in the roots, this base forms colourless crystals when purified by recrystallization from either EtOH or C6H6 . It has a specific rotation of [α]20D - 17.3° (c 0.46, CHCI3). The base is obtained by extraction with ammonium hydroxide and separated from other alkaloids on a cellulose column, eluting with CHCl3 saturated with formamide. It is then purified by paper chromatography. Chemical evidence shows that loveraine is an ester alkaloid.
