What is KORSINE?

Description

This steroidal alkaloid, also present in Korolkowia sewerzowii, has [α]D + 87.9° (c 0.1, EtOH). It yields a series of crystalline salts, e.g. the hydrochloride, m.p. 301-3°C; hydrobromide, 324-6°C; hydriodide, m.p. 292-4°C and methiodide, m.p. 273-5°C. The base contains three hydroxyl groups and yields a triacetate (perchlorate m.p. 290-2°C). Hydrogenation over Pt yields the dihydro derivative, m.p. 274-6°C, also forming a triacetate, m.p. 235-6°C. Chromic acid oxidation furnishes korsinone, m.p. 276-8°C giving an oxime, m.p. 273-5°C. More vigorous oxidation with the same reagent yields korsindione, m.p. 258- 260°C; oxime, m.p. 277-8°C. The dihydro derivative may also be oxidized with chromic acid to yield dihydrokorsinone, m.p. 218-220°C, also forming an oxime, m.p. 188-191 ° C. Huang-MinIon reduction of korsinone furnishes deoxydihydrokorsinone, m.p. 208-210°C.
