khat: A plant, Catha edilis, found inEast Africa and the Arabian peninsular.The leaves are chewed to give amildly stimulating and euphoric effect.Its activity comes from two alkaloids:cathine and, in fresh leaves,the more potent cathinone. It is acontrolled substance in many countriesincluding the US. In the UK it isnot a controlled substance and isused by certain Somalian and Yemeniethnic groups.
