What is Josamycin?

Description

Josamycin was found in the culture broth of Streptomyces narboensis var. josamyceticus by Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co. and the Institute of Microbial Chemistry in 1964. It was the first macrolide antibiotic with a 16- membered lactone constituent to be prepared as a single compound. Its lactone structure was first thought to be 17-membered, but later this idea was revised and its identity with leucomycin A3, a component of kitasamycin, was confirmed. Clinically, josamycin is given to children in the form of a base or propionate ester to avoid its bitter taste.
