What is ISOSOLAFLORIDINE?

Description

Solanum callium yields this alkaloid which forms colourless needles from Et20. It has a specific rotation of [ex] P1 + 44.8° (c 0.85, CHCI3) and the ultraviolet spectrum in EtOH consists of a single absorption maximum at 239 nm. The base has been isolated by hydrolysis of the crude glycoalkaloid present in the above plant. The hydrochloride, m.p. 325-330°C (dec.) with a transition at 31l-2°C, is sparingly soluble in EtOH and has been utilized for the determination of the structure of the alkaloid by X-ray crystallography. The crystals are rectangular plates on the monoclinic system with space group P2 1, a = 6.761, b = 30.563 and c = 6.368 A with Z = 2. Treatment with Ac20 in pyridine furnishes the triacetyl derivative as colourless crystals with m.p. 228-9°C, a specific rotation of [ex]?j + 87.5° (c 1.05, CHCI3) and an ultraviolet spectrum with a single absorption maximum at 236 nm in ethanol.
