What is ICELAND MOSS (Cetraria islandica Ach.)?

Description

Perennial plant (lichen) having an erect, branched, gray-greenish thallus. Approximately 12 cm (5 in.) high, the plant grows in rocky areas, woods, and on the bark of conifers in Europe, Iceland, Scandinavia, Greenland, North America, and Asia. It is harvested throughout the year. The part used is the thallus. Iceland moss has a bitter, tonic taste and an aromatic odor. The derivatives are decoction (3%), fluid extract, tincture (20% in 20% ethanol). The main constituents of the dried product include lichenin, isolichenin, lichenic acids, fatty acid lactones, furan derivatives, and terpene derivatives.
