4-Ethyl-4''-(4-pentylcyclohexyl)-1,1''-biphenyl is used in the calibration of differential scanning calorimeters using liquid crystal transitions of standard liquid crystals. It is also used as a substance in the optical anisotropy (birefringence) value of nematic liquid crystal material determination.
