What is ADENYLATE CYCLASE?
General Description
Adenylate cyclase, a membraneenzyme, is another target of muscarinic receptor activation. The second-messenger cAMP is synthesized within the cellfrom adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by the action of adenylatecyclase. The regulatory effects of cAMP are many, as itcan activate various protein kinases. Protein kinases catalyzethe phosphorylation of enzymes and ion channels, alteringthe amount of calcium entering the cell and thus affectingmuscle contraction. Muscarinic receptor activation causeslower levels of cAMP, reducing cAMP protein-dependentkinase activity, and a relaxation of muscle contraction. Some have suggested that a GTP-inhibitory protein (Gi) reducesthe activity of adenylate cyclase, causing smooth musclerelaxation .
