Description
5-(Difluoromethoxy)-2-mercapto-1H-benzimidazole is a thiol derivative of benzimidazole with a group substituted at the 5-position by difluoromethoxy. 5-(Difluoromethoxy)-2-mercapto-1H-benzimidazole is one of the main intermediates of pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor for the treatment of gastric ulcers. Pantoprazole acts by reducing gastric acid secretion and inactivating H+-ATPase in the stomach. The synthesis of pantoprazole begins with the coupling of 5-difluoromethoxy-2-mercaptobenzimidazole with 2-chloromethyl-3,4-dimethoxypyridinium hydrochloride followed by an oxidation reaction.

What are the applications of Application
5-(Difluoromethoxy)-2-mercapto-1H-benzimidazole is used as an intermediate in Pantoprazole sodium, a drug for the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and gastro-intestinal disorders. It is also utilised in the preparation of α-glucosidase inhibitors for their efficacy in antidiabetic activity.
