Physical properties
3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-o-cresol is practically insoluble in water. The solubility (g/L) in various solvents is as follows: ethanol 85, isopropanol 80, ethylene glycol 9, propylene glycol 8, vaseline oil 4. Tetrabromo-2-methylphenol discolors in light and in contact with traces of iron.
The Uses of 3,4,5,6-TETRABROMO-O-CRESOL
Fungicide.
Preparation
3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-o-cresol is obtained by reaction of o-cresol with bromine in tetrachloromethane in the presence of aluminum and iron powder. It is used as a preservative for cosmetics, as an active component in deodorants and disinfectants, and as an active agent for antimycotic finishing of textile materials; it is, however, of minor importance.
