Arsine is a colourless, flammable, and highly toxic gas. It has a garlic-like or fishy odour that can be detected at concentrations of 0.5 ppm and above. Because arsine is not irritating and produces no immediate symptoms, persons exposed to hazardous levels may be unaware of its presence. It is generally shipped in cylinders as a liquefied compressed gas. Arsine gas is generated when metals or crude ores containing arsenic impurities are treated with acid.
