What is 1,4-Butanediol?
1,4-Butanediol is one of the isomers of butanediol. It is the terminal dihydroxy substituent of butane. It is a colorless viscous liquid at room temperature. Industrially, 1,4-butanediol is produced by reacting acetylene with two molecules of formaldehyde to generate 1,4-butynediol and then hydrogenating. It can also be obtained by gas phase hydrogenation of anhydrides or acid esters of succinic or maleic acid.
1,4-Butanediol is mainly used as a solvent in the production of plastics and fibers and as a raw material for the preparation of other chemical products.
What is 1,4-Butanediol used for?
1,4-Butanediol is used industrially as a solvent and in the manufacture of some types of plastics, elastic fibers and polyurethanes. In organic chemistry, 1,4-butanediol is used for the synthesis of γ-butyrolacton e (GBLLL).
