Vardenafil can effectively improve the quality and duration of erectile dysfunction and improve the success rate of sexual life in male patients with erectile dysfunction. The initiation and maintenance of penile erection are related to the relaxation of smooth muscle cells in the corpus cavernosum. Cyclic guanosine phosphate (cGMP) is a mediator of relaxation of smooth muscle cells in the corpus cavernosum. By inhibiting the decomposition of cGMP by inhibiting type 5 phosphodiesterase, the accumulation of cGMP, relaxation of smooth muscle of cavernous body and erection of penis can be prevented. Compared with phosphodiesterase isoenzymes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, it has a high selectivity for phosphodiesterase type 5. Some data show that the selectivity and inhibition of type 5 phosphodiesterase are superior to other type 5 phosphodiesterase inhibitors.
