Somatostatin is a growth inhibitory hormone, which was first discovered by Brazen et al in 1973 from the animal hypothalamus, mainly containing 14 and 28 amino acids. It is widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as the gastrointestinal tract, and also exists in the hearts of rats and humans. In the gastrointestinal mucosa, somatostatin is released by D cells, and its content is highest in the gastric antrum and the gastric body. Somatostatin can inhibit the secretion of bombesin and glucose-deoxyglucose, reduce the activity of renin, and produce the hypotensive effect. Somatostatin has negative muscle force on isolated guinea pig heart. It can further reduce heart index and arterial blood pressure in the presence of furosemide. It can regulate the secretion of hormones in the digestive tract, stabilize the cell membrane and protect it. In addition, somatostatin inhibits the secretion of all gastrointestinal tract.
