About Phenophthalein
Phenophthalein is a weak organic acid with a molecular formula of C20H14O4 and a simplified structural formula of (C6H4OH)2COC6H4CO. It is a colorless lactone structure in a solution with pH <8.2, and a pink quinone structure when pH> 8.2. It is a commonly used acid-base indicator. The quinoid or quinoid acid salt of phenophthalein is very unstable in alkaline medium. It will slowly transform into a colorless carboxylate form; it will immediately transform into a colorless carboxylic acid when encountering a thicker lye Salt style. Therefore, when the phenlphthalein reagent is dripped into the concentrated lye, the phenlphthalein starts to turn red, and the red fades quickly and becomes colorless. Phenophthalein is colorless when the pH is less than 8.2 to 0, and shows orange-yellow in strong acid.
Phenophthalein is a small white or slightly yellow crystal, which is hardly soluble in water but easily soluble in alcohol. Therefore, phenophthalein is usually formulated into an alcohol solution for use. When the phenophthalein reagent is dripped into water or a neutral, acidic aqueous solution, white turbidity will appear. This is because alcohol is easily soluble in water, and phenophthalein, which is hardly soluble in water, precipitates out in the reagent. Phenophthalein is produced by the condensation of phthalic anhydrid and two molecules of pheno in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid heating. This method was discovered by Adolf von Bayer in 1871.
