What is VOACRISTINE (Voacangarine)?

Description

A further alkaloid isolated from Voacanga africana, this base yields colourless plates from either aqueous MeOH or a mixture of C6H6 and petroleum ether. When crystallized from Et20 it forms prisms, m.p. 163-5°C. The base is laevorotatory with [α]²⁰_D - 24.5° (CHC13). A secondary hydroxyl group is present which may be acetylated with AC20 in pyridine to yield the O-acetate as colourless needles from MeOH, m.p. 19l-3°C and [α]²³_D - 27° (CHC13).
