What is TOXIFERINE lIB?
Description
An alkaloid of calabash curare, the base is quaternary and has the probable formula given above which is based upon analysis of the chloride and picrate, m.p. 215°C (dec.). When the picrate is treated with HCI, the product is not toxiferine II chloride but an isomeride, toxiferine IIa-chloride, crystallizing in rectangular plates, decomposing from 250-274°C and having [α]D + 66.6° (H2O). The latter has been isolated from some curares from Caracas but it is believed to be formed by the action of plant acids on toxiferine II during extraction.
