What is SPHEROCARRINE?

Description

Isolated from Retama spherocarpa, this alkaloid is a colourless, oily liquid which has [α]18D + 81°· (c 5.418, EtOH). It forms a series of crystalline salts including the hydrobromide, m.p. 244°C; [α]22D - 22.5° (c 0.2219, EtOH); the hydriodide, m.p. 233°C; [α]20D - 34.6° (c 0.147, H20); perchlorate, m.p. 222°C and the thiocyanate, m.p. 177°C. Hydrogenation over Pt02 give the dihydro derivative as a colourless oil, b.p. 144°C/0.5 mm; [α]18D + 15.9° (c 0.628, EtOH).
