Definition

ChEBI: Sorbitan monooleate is a fatty acid ester.

General Description

Span 80 is a nonionic surfactant.

Safety Profile

A skin irritant. Human mutation data reported. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.

Property

The hydrophilic-lipophilic balance value (HLB value) of the Span 80 is 4.3, and the Span 80 can be mixed and dissolved with oil to form a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifier. It is a non-ionic surfactant and has excellent emulsifying, dispersing, foaming, moistening and other performance.

Preparation

Span 80 is also called Span-80, chemical name is sorbitan monooleate, which is formed by esterifying sorbitan after dehydration and oleic acid.
