What is SP ATHULA TINE?

Description

A complex alkaloid isolated from Lupinus sericeus and L. spathu!atus, this base forms colourless crystals from Me2CO and is sparingly soluble in Et20 or petroleum ether but dissolves quite readily in CHC13, EtOH, C6H6 or H20. In general, the solutions are found to be slightly laevorotatory. The crystalline picrate melts at l82-4°C; the methiodide has m.p. 250-2°C and the mercuri_x0002_iodide, m.p. 164°C. The alkaloid also forms a crystalline compound with potassium iodide, m.p. 260-l oC. Spathulatine is somewhat sensitive to concentrated mineral acids. Boiling with dilute HCl converts it into a basic substance, ClsH24N2, which is isomeric with spartyrine and yields a perchlorate, m.p. 2l6-7°C and a picrate m.p. 2l4-6°C.
