What is SCHIZOZYGINE?

Description

The major alkaloid obtained from the bark and roots of Schizozygia caffaeoides (Boj.) Baill. The base has [α]²³_D + 15.5° (c 1.0, CHC1₃) and gives an ultraviolet spectrum having absorption maxima at 269 and 313 mil. The alkaloid possesses both antipyretic and broncholytic properties. When hydrogenated in AcOH in the presence of Pt0₂ it yields the dihydro derivative, m.p. 190-1°C;[α]²⁴_D + 29.4° (c 1.0, CHCI₃). Hydrogenation with LiAIH₄, however, gives deoxoschizozygine, m.p. 213-233°C (dec.); [α]²⁶_D + 82.9° (c 1.0, CHCI₃). The two reduction processes are protected by patents.
