What is Ribalinium?
Description
A quaternary furoquinolinium alkaloid also obtained from the bark of Balfourodendron riedelianum (Engler) Engler., the alkaloid is normally isolated as the crystalline chloride, m.p. 188-1 90°C (dec.); [α]24D + 40° (c 1.2S, MeOH) which gives an ultraviolet spectrum in MeOH with absorption maxima at 221, 247, 299 and 334 mJ.t with an inflexion at 293 mf.1. The perchlorate crystallizes from EtOH, m.p. 21S-220°C (dec.) and the picrate has m.p. 192-3°C (dec.). A phenolic hydroxyl group and a tertiary hydroxyl group are present and the alkaloid forms an O-methyl ether which furnishes crystalline salts, e.g. the iodide, m.p. 193-4°C (dec.); [α]18D + 20° (c LIS, MeOH); the perchlorate, m.p. 200- 2°C (dec.) and the picrate, m.p. lSI-2°C.
