What is RESERPININE (Raubasinine)?

Description

A constituent of Rauwolfia serpentina, the base also occurs in Vinca major and forms light yellow plates when crystallized from aqueous Me2CO. It has specific rotations of [α]22D - 95° (pyridine) and [α]20D - 131° (c 1.18, CHCl 3).1t yields crystalline salts and derivatives, e.g. the hydrochloride, m.p. 244-6°C (dec.); perchlorate, m.p. 254.5°C; nitrate, m.p. 271-3°C and the methiodide, m.p. 240° C (dec.).
