What is POHAKULINE?

Description

Isolated from the bark of Sophora chrysophylla, pohakuline forms colourless needles when crystallized from Me2CO. It is optically active with a specific rotation of [α]²⁵_D - 17.2° (c 0.82, EtOH). The aurichloride has been prepared as an amorphous yellow powder, m.p. 160-5°C. Reduction of the base with LiAIH4 furnishes the dihydro derivative, m.p. 155-6°C. The structure has been determined from chemical and spectroscopic data and, like mamanine (q.v.), this alkaloid represents an intermediate in a previously unknown biogenetic path of the Sophora alkaloids.
