What is PLEIOCARPO LINE?

Description

The bark of Pleiocarpa mutica Benth, and P. tubicina Stapf. both yield this alkaloid which is the N(b)-oxide of Pleiocarpine (q.v.). It forms white prismatic crystals from MeOH-Et20 and has [cdb6 - 131° (c 2.2, CHC13). The ultraviolet spectrum exhibits absorption maxima at 208, 245, 281 and 287 mJ1. The base may be characterized as the hydrochloride, m.p. 219-221°C and the methiodide, m.p. 232-3°C (dec.). Heating the alkaloid with 10 per cent KOH gives kopsino_x0002_line while pyrolysis at 180°C yields Pleiocarpine (q.v.) and formaldehyde.
