What is P AKIST ANINE?

Description

This alkaloid is an aporphine-benzylisoquinoline base, also present in Berberis baluchistanica. It may be separated from the preceding alkaloid by column chromatography and is also dextrorotatory with [α]²⁹_Dl>s + 106° (MeOH). The ultraviolet spectrum in EtOH has absorption maxima at 218, 270, 277 and 307 mil. Two methoxyl groups and two phenolic hydroxyl groups are present and the alkaloid forms a crystalline O,O-dimethyl ether, m.p. 137°C. The structure has been elucidated from the infrared, NMR and mass spectra.
